Pneumatic Butterfly Valves with Rotary Actuator
Butterfly valves with pneumatic rotary actuator reliably shut off, open and control your pipelines via a 90° disc rotation. Choose between double-acting and spring-return actuators, various materials and nominal sizes – matched to the medium, pressure and installation conditions of your system. From wafer-style standard designs to DVGW-approved versions for water, find the right series for your application.
Double-Acting & Spring-Return, DN 40–500
Your benefits
Pneumatic butterfly valves – correctly specified
Butterfly valve and pneumatic rotary actuator come as a matched unit – you define the actuation principle, nominal size and material to suit your process.
Two actuation principles
Double-acting (compressed air opens and closes) or spring-return/single-acting with a defined fail-safe position on air failure – you determine the behaviour of your valve.
Sizing by DN & flange
Series from DN 40 to DN 500 in wafer and lug/flanged versions, PN 6/10/16 and ANSI 150 depending on variant. Face-to-face dimensions to EN 558-1 / ISO 5752.
Materials for your medium
Bodies in GGG40 (epoxy-coated) or stainless steel, discs in 1.4408, seats in EPDM and other elastomers – media compatibility depends on version.
DVGW approval for water
For drinking water and water applications we offer butterfly valves with DVGW approval in the BUA-D-DVGW series.

Drive selection
Double-acting or spring-return?
The most important design decision concerns the valve's behaviour on loss of air supply. Both actuator principles are available across the series.
| Double-acting (D) | Spring-return (S) | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating principle | Compressed air opens and closes | Compressed air opens, spring closes (or vice versa) |
| Behavior on air failure | Damper remains in last position | Damper moves to defined fail-safe position |
| Safety position | Not self-acting | Fail-safe (normally closed / normally open) |
| Typical application | Fast, repeatable switching operations | Safety-oriented process steps |
| Control pressure | 5.5–8 bar | 5.5–8 bar |

How to Find the Right Butterfly Valve
Note the DN, flange standard, medium and required fail-safe position before selecting – this helps you find the right series in just a few steps.
Define the Actuator Principle
- Double-Acting (D)
- Compressed air acts in both directions; compact and often more cost-effective; on failure, the last position is maintained.
- Spring-Return (S)
- A spring automatically returns the disc to the defined fail-safe position on air failure.
- Fail-Safe Position
- For safety-critical process steps, define 'normally closed' or 'normally open'.
Assess System & Medium
- Nominal Size (DN)
- Pipe bore determines the series – from DN 40 to DN 500 depending on the series.
- Flange Standard & Pressure Rating
- PN6/10/16 or ANSI 150; wafer or lug/flanged design, face-to-face dimensions to EN 558-1 or ISO 5752.
- Material & Temperature
- Match body, disc and liner materials (e.g. GGG40/1.4408/EPDM) to the medium and temperature range.
- Compressed air supply
- Provide control pressure of 5.5–8 bar and consider accessories such as maintenance units.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pneumatic Butterfly Valves – FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about sizing, actuation and materials.
What is a pneumatic butterfly valve?
A pneumatic butterfly valve closes a pipeline via a rotatably mounted disc that a pneumatic rotary actuator swings through 90°. This allows the valve to open and close remotely and automatically.
What control pressure is required?
The pneumatic actuators in our series operate at a control pressure of 5.5 to 8 bar – a standard range for industrial compressed air systems.
What is the difference between double-acting and spring-return valves?
Double-acting actuators use compressed air for both opening and closing; spring-return actuators automatically move to a defined safe position upon loss of air supply (fail-safe).
What nominal sizes are available?
Depending on the series, nominal sizes from DN 40 to DN 500 are available. The exact range for each series can be found on the respective product page.
Are there versions approved for drinking water?
Yes. The BUA-D-DVGW series is available with DVGW approval for water – housing GGG40 epoxy-coated, disc 1.4408, liner EPDM.
Which flange standards are supported?
Depending on the series PN6/10/16 and ANSI150, in wafer or lugged/flanged design with face-to-face dimensions to EN 558-1 or ISO 5752.
Which media and temperatures are the butterfly valves suitable for?
This depends on the body material and liner of the selected variant. The permitted media, temperature and pressure ranges are listed on the respective product page; special versions are available on request.
